Who we are
Founded in 1961, The Children's Jewish Education Group (CJEG) is a cooperative school developed and run by parents. We specialize in families who are looking for an alternative to Temple-Based Hebrew School. CJEG has a wide range of members, most of which are families who live throughout Westchester and southern Connecticut. The school provides a way for children to connect with their Jewish heritage, and to explore the basic tenets, values, culture and traditions of the Jewish faith.

A Cooperative School With a Professional Staff
From Kindergarten through seventh grade, CJEG provides our students with a foundation to experience the joy, pride and appreciation of being Jewish. A wealth of Jewish traditions, history, music, art and holiday celebrations are shared by classmates as they discover the richness and uniqueness of our heritage. Our paid staff includes an educational director, administrator and seven teachers. Each class has a former student who works as a paid teacher's aide.

                                                                                       August 11, 2011

Dear CJEG Families,

Welcome back, and welcome to our new families!   I would like to extend our thanks to the Schechter family, who provided us with extensive information about the Salute to Israel parade, and the Levy family, who hosted a warm social gathering in their home after school let out.  These kinds of events help to foster a sense of our CJEG family even when classes are not in session.

The first day of class this year is September 11th, when we will be having our first parent meeting at 9:45.  You can mark your calendars for October 30th, when Ed Lessing will be speaking to us about his experiences during the Holocaust.  In the spirit of continuing our social activities, you can also mark your calendars with a November 12th cocktail party/fundraiser at the Barbers’ home.  Details will follow.

I would like to remind everyone of some of our school policies:

We need your cooperation at dismissal time.  PLEASE PICK YOUR CHILD UP AT THE CLASSROOM DOOR.  In the interest of safety, we cannot allow children to wait downstairs or down a hallway where we cannot see them.

If you are late picking up your child, or need to reach us at Purchase, please use my cell phone number, 914-625-3264, as the contact number.

Our assigned parking lot is Parking Lot 1, near the Performing Arts Center.  In order to avoid ticketing, please do not park in the lot behind the Humanities Building.  Please do not park in the handicapped spaces directly behind the Humanities Building without a handicapped tag.

We are, and will continue to be, a parent-run cooperative school.  Each grade is responsible for a holiday celebration during the year, and the holiday coordinator will let you know what you will need to bring in.  The holiday grades and coordinators are listed on the back of the calendar.  If you would like to help out as a class parent, especially in the seventh grade, please let the individual teachers know.

Snack sign-up sheets will be available for grades K-3 the first week or two of school.  Don’t forget to sign up!

Charlie’s Hebrew classes will begin on the first day of class, September 11th.  The beginner’s class is from 8:30-9:30 and the advanced class is from 11:30-12:30.  You can contact him at 203-281-4866, or at chazros@aol.com.

If you have any questions, suggestions or feedback regarding curriculum, please feel free to contact me.

                                                                             Sincerely,

Beth Vallone

Education Director

Holiday Celebrations
We celebrate the holidays together, with parents and siblings invited to join in the festivities. We are affiliated with a local synagogue, where we have high holiday services.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Lessons are Available
For those families who are interested, our seventh grade teacher conducts additional classes for students who wish to prepare for becoming a bar or bat mitzvah. Individual tutoring is also available.

We are affiliated with a local synagogue, where Bar/Bat Mitzvah services and ceremonies are held.

Special Events and Speakers
Each year we invite special speakers and authors to discuss a wide range of topics. Visit our school calendar to see this year's schedule.
